What is different about attending camp at WestWind Stables?
Shari Thomas has been teaching children horseback riding lessons for over 30 years. She is a mother of four and owns and operates the ranch at WestWind Stables with her husband Martin and their children.
Since Shari attended camp as a young girl, she understands the frustration of going to a "Ranch Camp" and only spending an hour a day with a horse (or not riding at all if it was raining). She designed WestWind Equestrian Camp as a camp where just about everything involves horses.
WestWind Stables is an operating horse ranch. Campers can actually participate in the daily activities of a Ranch business. It does not open in the summer for camp and then close. Our camp horses are here at the ranch all year and are very well trained for our program. Our horses love campers and lots of TLC. Many of the horses are horses we have rescued.
In addition to arena riding, we go on trail rides, have horse "games," and travel through an obstacle course on horseback. Horseback riding is taught by qualified riding instructors and campers have actual riding lessons. We also have educational classes about horses and horsemanship (including a lesson booklet to bring home). Plus, a farrier will do a demonstration about caring for and trimming a horse's feet.
During the regular week long summer camp sessions we spend time each day practicing for our Special Horse Presentation.
Afternoons are spent swimming in the pool. In the evenings, we have bonfires, ride horses bareback, sing-a-longs, hikes, play games and read or watch horse stories.
The only thing you have to worry about at WestWind Stables will be finding time to do all the fun things we have to do!
